I have spent the past three days for about eight hours a day unsuccessfully finding an apartment in Chicago. The market here has done a 180 on me and I was completely unprepared. Due to the cap in the real estate market, all of those people that had a year to get of out of their apartments - or buy them - have all moved out and now in my potential dwellings. I honestly can not believe the complete (expensive) crap I have seen in the past three days and my frustrations are trying to get the better of me. Took some deep breaths and realized it was not the end of the world, so going to rent a room for the month of August and keep on trucking for a September 1st move in date.
Being in Germany taught me to keep my expectations low in uncontrollable situations, and always look at the brighter side if things got tricky. Or, I call it the "At Lease I'm Not in Radolfzell" mantra. It really works. Yes, I am having a terrible time finding a place, and I want to scream if I have to walk up Milwaukee Avenue again for 20 minutes, but hey, at least I am not in Radolfzell, Germany. This makes things brighter.
You know that feeling you get when you walk into an apartment and say, "This is it. This is home."? I have yet to really get that in the past three days. I saw a couple of places that were okay, but I knew after a month there I would hate it, after I was done tolerating it.
Some Chicago rental adventure highlights:
- The perfect "Logan Square Location", yeah, perfect if you want your car stolen.
- The "Cozy Lincoln Park" brownstone with a great view...of a brick wall.
- The "Lincoln Park Artist Dream Space" complete with musty dog smell and unfinished ceiling.
- The "Wicker Park Fabulous One Bedroom"...too bad you can't fit a bed in the actual bedroom.
- The "Center Wicker Park Huge Luxury Loft", I didn't realize the center of Wicker Park was next to the expressway.
- The "Lincoln Park Brownstone", do I have to pay extra for the black mold? I think it should really be included.
