In order for you to properly understand my oberservation, I have to explain the concept of a "Belegte Brotchen" or "Belegte Baguette" to you. These forms of sandwich in Germany usually consist of some type of meat, cheese, lettuce, tomatos, cucumbers and mayo or butter (yes, I just said butter) on a small bread roll or baguette. They are all over Germany, and a nice alternative to fast food - usually cheaper, fresher and better for you than a cheeseburger or a döner sandwich. Usually they are pre-made lined up in little rows at the bakery, and you just pick one out and there you go. There is a small cafe in the lobby of my building that makes them fresh according to what you want on them. Sounds great right? Usually it is, unless I decide to go against the "norm" of what one should put on theirs.
Sometimes I want mayo, sometimes I don't. Other times I go for ham and cheese, sometimes just cheese. These are usually how my conversations go:
Christine: Belegte Baguette with cheese and ham, no mayo.
Server: No Mayo?
Christine: Yes, no mayo.
Server: (looks at me funny and grabs the spoon for the mayo)
Christine: No, no mayo.
Server: Are you sure?
Christine: Yes, I'm sure, and no lettuce.
Server: (huffs a bit and shakes her head) Lettuce?
Christine: No, no lettuce, just tomatos.
Server: (starts to go for the lettuce)
Christine: Please, no lettuce, just tomatos.
Server: (hufs a bit and shakes her head, looks at me like I am a space alien) To go?
Christine: Yes, to go.
Okay, so it would seem maybe this is a miscommunication of some sorts but this happens to me every time I decide to order one over the past two months, and 85% of the time it's from the same woman. I'm not quite sure what the undertones are of her behavior, I am guessing it has something to with going out of the norm - and most likely making her have to "work" harder. Most of the time I won't eat them when they are pre-made, because there is enough mayo or butter - sometimes mayo and butter together - on these things to give an elephant a heart attack. It not only happens in the place in my building, but every other time I decide to order one of these things, no matter where I am at.
I am actually lucky if they will make me one when I stop in to a bakery. I'll ask "Do you have any without mayo?" to which the answer is no and a blank stare, don't expect them to actually make you one - because they are a sandwich shop or something. God, how could I have the nerve to ask them to make me a sandwich? Oh, and on a special note - in the picture below that is indeed raw hamburger meat with onions on a piece of bread (with a side of Salmonella). People actually eat that here.
